Two terms keep coming up in connection with competency-based education: one is “psychological safety”, the other is “growth mindset”. Both are very important for optimal learning and are very close to our hearts.
“Psychological safety” means that the work culture, and especially the learning culture, is designed in such a way that you do not have to expect negative consequences if, for example, you do not know something or even make a mistake, but that support for further development is the main focus.
A “growth mindset” is an inner attitude based on the idea that abilities are not simply fixed but that you can develop. It therefore does not say “You can’t do this” but “You can’t do this yet.”
Unfortunately, the everyday clinical environment is often characterized by a harsh culture that prevents meaningful learning.
Adi wrote a short blog post about this for the ICBE Collaborators.
